Express Entry is Canada’s online immigration system designed to manage applications for permanent residence under three major economic programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class. It offers a fast and efficient way for skilled workers to settle in Canada, with processing times often under six months for successful applicants.
The process begins with creating an Express Entry profile.
Express Entry Ideal candidates for Express Entry typically have university or college degrees, skilled work experience, and proficiency in English and/or French. You can use a free online assessment tool to check your eligibility. To be eligible to apply as a skilled worker, you must have at least one year of continuous full-time or equivalent part-time work experience in a skilled occupation within the last ten years, demonstrate a minimum of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) seven in English or French through an approved language test, and have completed post-secondary education assessed against Canadian standards with an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).Meeting these requirements does not guarantee an ITA, as candidates with stronger profiles are more likely to be selected. The cost of immigrating to Canada via Express Entry is approximately $2,300 CAD for a single applicant and $4,500 CAD for a couple. This includes fees for language tests, ECA, biometrics, government processing fees, medical exams, and police clearance certificates. No government fees are required to submit your initial profile; fees are only requested when you are invited to apply for permanent residence. You must also demonstrate sufficient settlement funds unless you apply under the CEC program or have a valid job offer.A job offer is not required for Express Entry, but a valid job offer can add up to 200 points to your CRS score. Express Entry can take as little as six months from profile submission to visa issuance. Profiles remain active in the pool for 12 months. If not selected within this period, you can resubmit your profile. The CRS score is used to rank candidates in the Express Entry pool. It is based on factors like age, education, language proficiency, work experience, and Canadian connections. You can use a CRS calculator tool to estimate your score. While it is difficult to predict how the CRS score will fluctuate, steps can be taken to improve your score, such as enhancing language proficiency, obtaining additional education or work experience, and securing a provincial nomination or a valid job offer.Ideal candidates typically meet the following criteria: under 30 years old, hold multiple degrees or a Master’s degree, demonstrate high language proficiency (CLB level nine or higher), and have at least three years of skilled work experience.Factors that can boost your CRS score include higher language proficiency, bilingualism, Canadian work or educational experience, having a sibling in Canada, or a provincial nomination. To apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), candidates must first score at least 67 points on the FSW eligibility grid. Once in the pool, they receive a CRS score to rank them against other candidates. The minimum CRS score required for an ITA varies with each draw. It is important to improve your ranking to increase your chances of receiving an invitation. Express Entry language points are based on scores from approved English or French exams. Higher proficiency in both languages maximizes points.IELTS or another approved language test is required to demonstrate language proficiency. Scoring CLB 9 in each area of the test significantly impacts your CRS score. Your spouse or common-law partner may need to take a language exam to improve your overall score.A score of zero indicates that your profile does not meet eligibility requirements. Common reasons include expired documents or failure to meet work experience criteria.
